WEATHER PERMITS 2014 CAROL SERVICE TO GO AHEAD

On Thursday the 4th December the Order held its annual Carol Service in the lovely setting of The Church of the Good Shepherd in  Murrayfield Avenue in Edinburgh.

Around forty members of the Order and representatives from the charities who would receive their cheques were welcomed to the Service by Rt. Rev Alexander MacDonald who would lead the service after the Order’s Senior Chaplain Most Rev John Greenlees McConnell had stepped down. He was assisted by Rt. Rev Dr William Colville Thomas and Rev. Colin MacAulay.

The service included Christmas carols interspersed with readings form the Bible; these readings were ably carried out by Dame Lorraine Veitch-Rutherford, ( Isaiah 9 vs 2,6,7). Chev. George Young, (Matthew 1 vs 18-23 ), Cmdr Mary E Kenyon ( Luke 2 vs 1-7). Cmdr Shirley Muir (Luke 2 v 8-16), Chev. George Paul (Matthew 2 vs 1-12) and our Grand Baillie Chev. John L. Kelly (John 1 vs 1-14).

A change to normal procedure was that a short Christmas Message was given by the minister of the Church Revd. Dean Fosetkew; the organ was in the very capable hands of Norman Cochran, who led us in the singing of some wonderful carols.

At the end of the service the Grand Baillie made the cheque presentations and St Lazarus certificates to ten charities:

Leprosy Mission

Muirshiel Centre

Murambinda

SANDS Ayrshire

Deafblind Scotland

Osiligi Water Project Kenya

Margaret Sainte Claire

Sighthill Blind Club

Macmillan Cancer Support

Combat Stress

The evening rounded off with all gathering at the rear of the church for fellowship over a glass of wine and mince pies supplied by the East of Scotland Commandery.
